Our Story

Jum Designs is a family business based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We provide South Africans and tourists alike with beautiful handcrafted bags that feature quality finishes and authentic African flair.

We showcase our passion for the vibrancy and colour of South African life in our range of handmade bags for men, women, and kiddies.

Athough our team is skilled in working with many types of fabrics, we are known for our eye-catching shweshwe bags. Shweshwe fabric is synonymous with the colours and style of South African life. We take care to only use genuine pure cotton shweshwe manufactured by Da Gama Textiles.

Instead of leather, we use vegan vinyl in a range of gorgeous hues. At Jum Designs we are firm supporters of the ethical fashion movement.

One of our core values is skills development. As Jum Designs grows, our aim is to provide further skills training and employment for previously disadvantaged women living in KwaZulu-Natal.

Empowerment, upskilling, call it what you will, it’s how we aim to make a tangible difference in our part of the world.

Meet the Team

We are Emma and Amanda: daughter and mum, respectively. Our family tree boasts a plethora of creative souls including actors, dancers, artists, musicians, and writers. So it’s hardly surprising that we both pursued formal training in art and design. Essentially, we started Jum Designs to provide an outlet for our creativity.

Emma heads the Jum Designs team, overseeing all aspects of the business. She envisages Jum Designs as a means to combine three of her talents: teaching, creating with her hands, and diving into colour. Choosing, matching, contrasting, and playing with colour is what fuels her spirit. Emma also thrives when she is planning, organizing, and drawing up lists. She is passionate about using Jum Designs as a platform for empowering women. Importantly, Emma is Mom to Julian (born in 2016) whose nickname ‘Jum’ informed the business’ name.

Amanda’s true passion lies in translating our collaborative sketches into beautiful products. Her domain is the process of transforming drawings and designs into patterns and ultimately the initial stylish samples. Amanda can frequently be found scouring stores, magazines, and all sorts of sources for inspiration. Her experience and artistic talent ensure her eyes are always trained on important details and styling.

Thembi is the third member of the Jum Designs team. Thembi came to our family as a domestic helper. Her intelligence, integrity, and initiative were soon evident, as was her sense of style and colour. In 2017 Emma began to teach Thembi how to sew, with a view to incorporating her into the business. Thembi’s attention to detail and sheer enthusiasm saw her sewing skills develop tremendously. She now has her own sewing machine and is sewing more and more for Jum Designs as the business grows.
